**Course Description:** Substance use issues can surface in the workplace in many forms — from suspected on-the-job impairment to lawful off-duty cannabis use to employees with a history of addiction requesting accommodations. For employers and managers, navigating these situations requires balancing workplace safety, compliance with evolving state and federal laws, and consistent policy enforcement.

This webinar explores four real-world scenarios involving alcohol use, cannabis use, cannabis odor, and history of addiction. Participants will gain practical guidance on applicable laws, how to apply workplace policies, and step-by-step action plans for documentation, employee conversations, testing decisions, and reasonable accommodations.

Designed specifically for employers and practice leaders, this session focuses on best practices for addressing impairment — regardless of the substance — while maintaining a safe, compliant, and respectful workplace.

**Course Objectives:**
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Recognize when substance use becomes a workplace issue, including suspected impairment, cannabis odor, lawful off-duty use, and history of addiction.
2. Explain employer rights and obligations under applicable laws, including cannabis laws and the ADA as they relate to workplace safety and reasonable accommodations.
3. Apply a compliant response process by properly documenting observations, conducting professional employee conversations, and determining when testing is appropriate.
4. Implement consistent, policy-driven action steps that protect workplace safety while minimizing discrimination and liability risks.
