The dentist can be an important part of treatment of sleep disordered breathing, including Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA is a treatable condition that can have a severe effects on a persons’ overall health. Many that suffer sleep disorders are undiagnosed and are unaware of this serious condition. The dental team can be the first to recognize through appropriate examination and screening that the patient may be afflicted by this condition. Although a medical doctor is required to diagnose this condition, the dentist can treat those intolerant to the Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) device with an oral appliance. This presentation will give the dentist an overview of OSA, possible health effects and how oral appliances can help their patients.
